Providing a Unifying and Cohesive Program of Activities

Although there are a number of materials available for educators wishing to introduce global studies into their classrooms, these materials often represent a smorgasbord of activities rather than a cohesive program that builds the qualities of global studies into the hearts and minds of children over time.

In order to provide a cohesive and unifying program for student engagement, this Global Classroom Initiative incorporates three strands – or themes – of study; each strand providing a series of inter-related activities, and a process of learning whereby students build on previous knowledge and experiences, and move from a local to a global focus throughout grades 5-9.

In this way, the qualities of global studies that include understanding, awareness, and responsible action, become a “way of life” for students, rather than a subject-related topic to be memorized, tested, and forgotten.

As indicated by the “curriculum framework” below, the three strands of study for this Global Classroom Initiative include:

  1. Fostering a Fair and Ethical Society
  2. Cultivating a Balanced and Sustainable Environmentand
  3. Promoting a Culture of Peace, Leadership, and Power

Note:  This unifying program is considered as a “work in progress”.  As it evolves over time, gaps and inconsistencies between strands and activities will become fewer and less apparent.  To help facilitate this process, existing Global Studies resources that fit the flow of strand-related activities are woven into this program framework.
