The Curriculum FrameworkProviding a Unifying and Cohesive Program of Activities Although there are a number of materials available for educators wishing to introduce global studies into their classrooms, these materials often represent a smorgasbord of activities rather than a cohesive program that builds the qualities of global studies into the hearts and minds of children over time. In order to provide a cohesive and unifying program for student engagement, this Global Classroom Initiative incorporates three strands – or themes – of study; each strand providing a series of inter-related activities, and a process of learning whereby students build on previous knowledge and experiences, and move from a local to a global focus throughout grades 5-9. In this way, the qualities of global studies that include understanding, awareness, and responsible action, become a “way of life” for students, rather than a subject-related topic to be memorized, tested, and forgotten. As indicated by the “curriculum framework” below, the three strands of study for this Global Classroom Initiative include:
